Title tags are one of the most important aspects in search engine optimization (SEO) yet I often see them overlooked.

So what is a title tag? A title tag is the part of code that tells your browser what text to place in the top of the browser window. If you look at the top of your window for this page you’ll see “Adam Lee Design Blog.” This is something that we’ve programmed into our pages so that you’ll know what page you’re visiting.

These words serve the dual purpose of telling both the reader and the search engines what this page is all about. This is an opportunity that must not be overlooked. Often you’ll see a site with just a basic title at the top such as “Home” or possibly the company name. Although both of those can be essential aspects to the title tag, you’ll want to make sure that there’s more. Hopefully in your research you’ve identified keywords that your customers are searching for and therefore need to be on your website. Those keywords need to be up in your title tag.

Now here’s where the balancing act begins. Some people go overboard and throw everything they can into the title tag. You have to remember that first and foremost your website is for your customers, not the search engines. If you put 50 words in the title of your pages it’s going to be sloppy and confusing for your visitors. (and unless they’re using a very large monitor the title will get cut off) You must select only the most important keywords to go in that title tag. This will probably include your company name, the specific page (i.e. Home, Contact, etc.) and a few other keywords.

Luckily changing the title tags for your website is technically a fairly simple process if you know much about coding or are using a good html editor. The tougher part is making sure you’re using the correct keywords in those title tags but that’s something for another post.

Of course we can help you with your title tags or any other part of your web development.
